BYU (20-1, 6-0) defended their home turf tonight, handing San Diego State (20-1, 5-1) their first loss of the season. The Aztecs' loss leaves No. 1 Ohio State as the only undefeated team left in Division I.
The game was tightly contested until midway through the second half, when the Cougars pulled away and stayed ahead for good, winning 71-58.
Jimmer Fredette, the nation's leading scorer, led the Cougars with 43 points.
The loss will drop San Diego State in the national polls, but they still have a chance a high seed in the tournament.
The last team to complete and undefeated season was the 1975-1976 Indiana Hoosiers. Ohio State will continue play Saturday at Northwestern.
