Significance: It's Syracuse-Georgetown. The teams could both be winless going into the game and fans would still be doing this to each other. However, both teams are 7-4 in the conference, so a win means getting that much closer to the top, while a loss means falling back into the middle of the Big East pack.
Three Pointers:
- Georgetown's offense vs. Syracuse's defense: As explained in an article on Orange Fizz, the Hoyas' Princeton offense will force Syracuse to be mentally tough for the entire length of the shot clock. If the zone stands firm it can force Georgetown into taking tough shots. If not, the Hoyas will find the openings and easy shots that have given them the second ranked shooting percentage in the country (51%).
- Syracuse's guard play: Can the Orange match the Hoyas' backcourt? Scoop Jardine, Brandon Triche, and Dion Waiters have to either slow down Georgetown's guards on defense or match what they do on offense. Austin Freeman is shooting 54% from the field and 46% from beyond the arc. A hand must be in his face every time he shoots. Chris Wright and Jason Clark are no slouches either. They both have the potential to score 20. The way I see it, Syracuse is better off focusing on the defensive end. They were able to limit Kemba Walker, hopefully they can do the same tonight.
- Which team's momentum will carry them further?: Syracuse is on a two game winning streak, including an impressive win over Connecticut last week. The Hoyas, though, have won their last six. Games between evenly matched rivals often have many runs by both sides. The team that uses its momentum the best, both coming into the game and during it, will win.
Prediction: The Hoyas are on a tear, but I think the Orange can bring that to an end. The zone should disrupt Georgetown's shooters just enough to make a difference. This should be another interesting chapter to the rivalry.
